Motorcycle Repair: portable tach, hook ups, electronic signal

I have a 1982 vf750s Sabre v45 I need to set the carbs and need to know how to hook up a portabe tach? I dont want to damage the cdi units I just replaced 1 and they ar not cheap it runs good but is running to rich i rebuilt the carbs and the piliot screws are not set right yet. If you could help that would be great Thanks Dan.

Daniel, Can you use the one on the dash as kind of a starting point. Set the idle at about 1000 rpm then turn the mix screw in untill it almost shuts down back screw out untill it smooths out. If it runs faster turn the idle down again. Do each screw this way. The pilot screws may be out about 2 1/2 turns from all the way in seated. Once the is set the resyncronize each carb to flow correctly. You can use a electronic tac that is inductive. No hook ups just hold it near the motor and it picks up the electronic signal and displays it.
