Motorcycle Repair: 1986 sportster, clutch assembly, clutch lever

Question
hello there again, I have a 1986 sportster 1100 and I snaped the outer ramp in my clutch assembly, am in the process of replacing it and was wondering are there any external springs that I may have lost? (for the clutch lever) or are they internal and when I get it all back together and adjusted the proper tension will return?     thanks very much

Answer
Tobin,There are two types of clutches used on these. Some have a wave washer between the fiber discs that creates the force to hold the pressure plate and drive the hub. The other is fiber discs and drive discs and 10 coil type springs that hold the discs tight against the pressure plate and drive the splined hub. If this is the type you have the springs should'nt fly out but disassemble the clutch assembly and look over the outer basket to see if there is any wear between the notches.
