Motorcycle Repair: Starter removal, starter shaft, clutch pack

Question
Hey Mike it's Mike in Pa, hope things are going well for you out there. My starter went bad on my 1989 FLHS. It talks about the removal of the jack shaft in my service manual, however as you know after removing primary cover and bolt from jack shaft I could remove the starter. My question is what, if any, problems could occur by not removing the clutch pack to actually take the jack shaft out and greasing in like it says to when replacing it? Do I really need to go through all the extra stuff to line the jack shaft that I didn't really remove? Your opinion is always welcomed and follow.

Answer
Heres the problem. Without removing the jackshaft you will have trouble lining up the starter shaft to the jackshaft. there is a coupling between the jackshaft and the starter shaft that splined and it need to lign up perfectly or the starter wont go in. So if it were me I would remove the clutch and the jackshaft.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
