Motorcycle Repair: Suzuki LCD odometer/fuel gauge issues, v twins, fuel gauge

Question
1999 Suzuki VL1500 - Awhile back the odometer started switching back and forth from current mileage to all zeros.  Shortly after that started, the fuel LCD meter (both are LCD), began only dropping to 2 bars, which caused me to run out of gas thinking I had more fuel.  It is pretty much constant now - the odometer won't read correctly - only zeros or random numbers and the fuel indicator bars won't show the correct reading.  I have checked to make sure wires are clean and connected.  Is this an internal problem with the speedometer unit (ie, circuitry) or could this be something else?  I am trying to figure out which way to go with the repair of these two things.  Thanks.  Bob

Answer
Bob, Some of the digital units did,nt fair well in the beginning. You may need to replace the entire speedo unit. But beware these are costly. Some of the Kawasaki units are almost $800.00 to replace. Some of these units sat outside in the weather and some like the Dakota digital aftermarket dash did not like the vibration on some of the V-Twins If you do replace this multi function gauge be sure to write down the mileage so in can be added to the documentation such as titles ect.
