Motorcycle Repair: 1996 Honda Magna VF750c, honda vf750c magna, 1996 honda magna

Question
I have a 1996 Honda Magna VF750c. I was riding when it started cutting out on me and then it backfired and cut off completely. I checked the fuses and none of them were blown. I looked at the wiring harness and the male and female connectors where it plugs together were melted. Do you know what would cause this? I was able to cut the 2 connectors off and splice the wires together so that I could make it home but it is still shorting out somewhere and I haven't been able to track it down yet. Any advice and/or help you could give me with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
         THANKS, Ken

Answer
Ken, If you had given me the wire colors/location, I could have given you a better idea of the area of concern.

http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-vf750c-magna-750c-1996-usa_model7604/partslist/F++28.  shows how many connectors there are on the main harness.

If this was a connector of three yellow wires, that is for the stator. Often the connectors get corrosion inside, then the connections become overheated and then overheating results. Stator over-voltage conditions often damage the stator, reg/rectifier and wiring connectors.
