Motorcycle Repair: turn signals, harley sportster, signal wires

Question
I have a 1997 harley sportster and the previous owner took the front turn signals off so when i turn my signals on the back just stays lit how do i fix them so they blink.

Answer
Hi Nathan,

The signal lights work according to the current flow in the circuit.

If you add some bulbs or lights to the circuit
there will be more current flowing and the flasher unit
will respond. You may be able to do this by adding
a bulb or a resistor of some type.
You can do this on the front signal wires or just add
more lights to the rear.

If you were to add a light with the same bulb
wattage as your rear signals then the flasher should start working.

All this depends on the flasher being in working condition of course.

You will have to do this on each side for the signals to work.

Some newer flashers don't need the bulb resistance like
older ones to work but Harley sometimes builds their
flasher into a TSSM or turn signal security module
which is expensive to replace.

The turn signals should flash if you add more bulbs
to each side, perhaps an accessory light would work
if the bulbs were the right wattage.

Good luck!
