Motorcycle Repair: 1995 yamaha virago 750 speedometer, yamaha virago 750, 1995 yamaha virago 750

Question
Hello,  I have a 1995 Yamaha Virago 750 and the connection hose from the speedometer to the front tire assembly came off.  I reconnected the hose but the tach and speedometer still won't operate.  I do have power to both of them cause the lights still work inside the unit.  I really don't know too much about this assembly, could you please give me any suggestions on how to get the unit functional again.  thank you very much.

Answer
Hello Chuck,

The first thing to do is remove
the bottom end of the speedo cable
or hose as you call it from the
small gearbox on the front wheel.
It might have a screw holding it in.

Once you get the cable off
lift the front wheel off the
ground and turn it forward.

Watch inside the hole where
the cable goes in and see
if you can see a small flat
piece turning round.

If it is turning then the gearbox
for the speedo may be okay.
If not the wheel will have to
be removed to check the small
speedo gearbox gears.

Next, turn the inner speedo
cable by hand and see if it moves
at the top end when you turn it.
You will have to remove it
from the speedo back to check it.
It should just screw on and off.

You are checking to make sure the
speedo inner drive cable is not
broken. If it is you will need a new one.

If the wheel gearbox is turning and
the inner speedo cable is not broken
then it should work if you reconnect
the cable to the wheel and to the speedo unit.

The tachometer is another story,
it may have a broken orange wire
that connects to the ignition coil.
Also it has a black ground wire
that could be broken.

Sometimes the actual speedo and tach
meter units can fail. In this case you will
have to replace the unit as they cannot
usually be repaired.

Good luck!
