Motorcycle Repair: 1985 yamaha xj700 carb hoses, vacuum ports, vent tubes

Question
Hello,
I have acquired a 85 xj700 with the carbs off the bike. I rebuilt each carb and noticed the hoses coming off this carb have no noticeable place to connect. I got the main fuel hose connected, the other 7 seem to have nowhere to go. Above the intake boots on the heads I noticed there are ports that have boots on them blocking them off. Are the 2 hoses leading off the bar overfill? If so where do the other 4 go? Please help if possible.

Answer
Hi Steven,

You will only need the fuel hose
connected, the ports on the carb
boots are for connecting a vacuum
gauge to for synchronizing the carbs.
You can leave those plugged off
unless you get some vacuum sticks/gauges
for tuning.

The bottom of the float bowls may
have hoses attached, these are
air vent tubes and must be
left open to the atmosphere
so the carb bowls get air.

If you have a vacuum operated fuel
petcock then one of the boot
ports may be used for that.

If you have some hoses on the rear
of the carbs they are likely
hoses that went to emissions
equipment.

If you see no such tanks or valves then
the hoses would also just vent
into the atmosphere.

So just make sure you are not leaking any
fuel and leave the other hoses venting air
except for the vacuum ports on the boots and/or
the fuel petcock valve on the fuel tank.

Good luck!
