Motorcycle Repair: Shifting problem, yardwork, pawl

Question
I have a 2008 Yamaha Big Bear 400 with a shifting problem.  This past winter the bike got stuck in reverse while plowing.  I shut bike down and restarted it.  It sounded like something disengaged.  After restarting, I managed to get bike to shift but it bypasses neutral on downshifts and goes right to reverse.  By doing this it also bypasses the reverse knob.  I have tried to adjust the shift pedal height and the clutch free play but still have problem.  It will also bypass neutral when going from reverse to 1st gear.  Sometimes it will remain in reverse and go into neutral after several shift attempts.  I've only used this bike for plowing and occasional use for general yardwork.  This bike was bought used.  Another thing, the bikes idle speed seems to be higher than it had been.  Any thoughts that will help me narrow down problem would be helpful.

Answer
The idle problem may be just an adjustment to bring it back down. The reverse control is actually a lock the does not allow the shift drum to complete the turning movement. The locking lever could have come loose from the welded shaft it pivots on. Track down the cable that pulls the locking lever on the trans and check to see if lever and bolt that holds it togethor may have come apart binding the lever up and not allowing the lock to drop in place. If its ok you may have to remove side cover to see if inner locking pawl or shaft is broken. If its the shaft the part number is 4KB-18380-00-00 from yamaha.
