Motorcycle Repair: 1976 FLH, starter solenoid, starter relay

Question
Hi Mike,  Still!!! dealing with starting problems with my 1976 FLH.  two things have crept up.  I have switched from the old style starter relay to the small rectangular type.  do you know how this one should be wired? Its terminals are marked 30,85,86,87.  I think it's #87 that has an inner and outer terminal.  Is this the same relay used in the next flh's (late '78-82)?  Also, now my starter button shows continuity even when I'm not pressing the button.  That ain't right is it?  I have followed all of your suggestions so far (regarding the solenoid,etc.).  Also, how do I test the starter relay to see that it is operating properly?  I no longer have the older relay, but if it is recommended to go back to it I'm not sure I would know how to wire it in correctly.  I can read wiring diagrams, so that answer should be there.

Thanks Again,

Chris

Answer
Yes, its the newer relay. Its electronic instead of mech. You shouldnt show continuity when not pressing the button. If you were there would always be power going to the starter relay. To see if the relay is working, press the starter button and see if you have power going to the starter solenoid. If not then its not working.
Go to http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu346/chopsgarage/Late1985FXWGWiring.jpg
and you will see a relay like the one you want to wire.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
