Motorcycle Repair: 1998 Suzuki LS650, brike, fuel level

Question
Hi.  My brike will have some difficulty starting even with the choke on.  But it will start.  But it sputers on the road and even backfires  when shifing up while not engaged in gear.  The Carb has been cleaned (at home, not at shop).
The bike will drive well with the choke on and behaves badly as above when I push the choke back in.  This is the only problem I experience.  Pls advise.

Answer
Hello Lou, The choke circuit is actually an enrichener passage allowing more gas into the intake. Sounds like the carb is not allowing enough gas to flow on its own. Pull the carb back off and check that the jets are clean as well as the passages. Has the idle mixture screw had the factory installed plug removed so you can adjust the fuel/air mix? Also make sure fuel level float is adjusted to a proper height or you wont have enough fuel in bowl to draft properly.
