Motorcycle Repair: trys to run on one cylinder after a few miles, type bolts, pulse generators

Question
My 1995 VT1100c will die after a few miles but will start back fairly soon. When it starts back (while hot)it seems to run only on one cylinder and has no power. I have read that it could be the pulse generators. If that is true can you tell me how to change them? And also what gaskets will I need? Any special tools?

Answer
Hi Ricky,

I am not sure if you need pulse coils or not.
Have you checked when it stops if it still
has spark or not?

You can stick a spare plug on the wire
and ground it to the engine to see
if there is spark.

If there is spark then maybe you need to check
the fuel system.

If you have no spark when it quits then
the pulse generators could be an issue.
They should read 400-500 ohms resistance
between each pulsers set of wires, although heat can sometimes
cause them to quit anyway.

The pulse wire connectors should be under the seat in a white plug.
The wires are white/blue and blue on one
pulser, white/yellow and yellow
on the other.

The pulse generators are located under the right
side clutch cover on the engine.
To replace them the cover has to be removed
7 bolts? and maybe the lower frame piece.

The cover gasket will likely be needed.
The pulsers are on the far right side bolted
into the engine case.

They should have a gap of .012"-.028"
from the trigger piece on the end of the
crankshaft.

You would have to rethread the wiring out
the case and back up under the seat to plug
them in. Make sure the wires are water tight
as they leave the engine cases through
the rubber seal.

You might need an hand impact screwdriver
to remove any screws you run into if they
are the phillips type.

The hand impacts are hit with a hammer
as you turn them to loosen tight screws.

Allen type bolts will be no problem but you
will need a set of metric allen wrenches.

So check if it is a spark or fuel problem
first and you can get back to me if you
need fuel system info instead.

Good luck,
Wayne S.
