Motorcycle Repair: 94 flhtcu primary drain plug, thread pitch, heli coil

Question
QUESTION: My '94 bagger has 103k miles on it. My primary drain plug won't seal properly after numerous services. I want to install  a heli coil insert. My question is it 1/8 npt. If not, what thread pitch is it.
Thanks for your time, Greg Selky

ANSWER: I wouln not install a heli-coil. They dont work very well on bolts that you are taking in and out alot. use a stainless steel insert, which will not pull out. Its a 1/8-27 NPT

QUESTION: Mike,
Thanks again for your time, and replying quickly. I've used heli coils in the past, and have had good luck with them. However; not in this application, drain plug. What type of ss insert would you recommend? What's it's brand name, and is there a generic that's just as good and cheaper? I've used inserts in the past, but on the primary the one's I used would be too long. They would be way thicker than than the primary case, and hit the chain.
Thanks, Greg Selky

Answer
I use the lock type so they dont come out. I have gotten them at grainger before. I did some checking and you have to buy 25 inserts and you have to have a special too to install them. You might want to look around on the net and see if you can find some where you dont have to buy so many
