Motorcycle Repair: 82 ironhead trany/clutch, clutch gear, clutch basket

Question
QUESTION: the clutch basket on my sporty is sliding on the clutch gear shaft and the basket ring gear is rubbing the starter. i have changed the bearing in the basket but this did not work. i have noticed that the clutch gear (mainshaft) has little bumps on it and this looks like it holds the basket back. could it be possible that they have wore down and this is why the basket is sliding and getting into my starter? i have ordered a new clutch gear for the trany and figured changing it would not hurt since this one is almost 30 years old. please tell me that i am on the right track here. if not what else could it be?

ANSWER: When you say it slidding are you refering to the inner clutch hub that sits on the tranny shaft?

QUESTION: yes, it is the clutch drum (oem 37716-81) that has the bearing in it. the bearing sits on the shaft, or clutch gear (oem 37448-79) that comes out of the tranny. this shaft looks like it had little bumps on it to keep that bearing from sliding. could you please tell me if i am on the right track or if it could be something else causing the problem. i have changed the bearing (oem 37722-71) thanks for any help you can give.

Answer
It sounds like your mainshaft on your trans is work and needs replaced. there should not be any bumps on it at all. the clutch shpuld not slide on it after the nut has been tightened, unless high gear is moving back and forth
Good luck and happy riding
