Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha Virago 250, yamaha 250 virago, virago 250

Question
Yamaha 250 Virago. I have oil coming out through the air filter. Also Battery is
always going flat even though i have it on a trickle charger when not in use.

Answer
Eddie,

-Has the battery been tested as good?
If so, it may be a bad stator on the engine
or a faulty regulator.

-Check the charging output at 3000 rpm on
the battery. It should be around 14 volts.

-Also check the battery cables and any
large connectors for corrosion.

-Has the compression been checked and/or a cylinder
leak down test done? Oil in the air filter
may not be a good sign. The engine breather
is often routed into the air filter box
and excess oil means worn engine parts
are allowing oil to blowby the piston
rings and so the oil passes out the air
breather into the air box and filter.

-the top end of the engine would need
to be rebuilt to prevent this.
Probably new rings and or new pistons
and rebore depending on the condition
of the cylinders.

-should have at least 130 PSI compression,
preferably over 150 PSI.
