Motorcycle Repair: Reassembling 4 speed Shovelhead primary drive, ft lbs torque, loctite 242

Question
Good day, Mike - a few questions relative to reassembling the primary drive and clutch on a four speed shovelhead.

The factory service manual I have for 1984 – 1990 FXRs covers the last year of the dry clutch (1984), so I’ve been using that as a guide, as my original service manual from 1976 is not as informative.

The instructions for reinstalling the primary chain/compensating sprocket nut indicate to apply some Loctite 242 to the compensating sprocket nut and hand torque at 80-100 ft. lbs. Some of the user forums I’ve read even suggest going up to 150 ft. lbs. torque.

When you are performing this task what are the procedures you  follow and what do you torque the compensating sprocket nut at?

Also, for reinstalling the steels and clutch fibers in the clutch basket, the same group of instructions indicates to spray the fibers with some non-petroleum based silicone spray to prevent oil absorption, etc.

Once again, do you recommend this and is this the practice you  follow when reassembling a dry clutch with new clutch fibers? If so, what type of spray is recommended, as most of the silicone sprays I’ve used seem to contain petroleum products?

Thank you for your time and any information you are able to provide.

Regards - Jim

Answer
torque the motor sprocket not to 100-150 and you will be fine. Put some Loctite 242 ont he threads and you will be fine.
Dont spray anything on the clutch plates. they are suppose to be dry. Silcone spray may cause your clutch to slip.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
