Motorcycle Repair: 98 vulcan, vacuum leaks, vacuum leak

Question
it is my first bike all last year rode good now my idle is way to high after 5 min of running how do i adjust it

Answer
Paul, first of all there are a number of "Vulcan" named motorcycles in Kawasaki's inventories, so I really don't know which one you have.

Fast idles are usually controlled by the choke system if you have carburetor on the bike. If the choke system is hanging up or has some kind of defect, then the idle will continue to be higher than normal. If the choke is being released properly, then the other usual causes of a fast idle are vacuum leaks in intake hose plumbing or control devices.

If you left old fuel in the carburetor for extended periods of time, varnish forms internally, causing parts to stick or move slowly. You could have a sticking carb slide, due to varnish deposits. Some carburetors have anti-backfire valves that can fail, causing a vacuum leak, which results in high idle speeds.

Improperly routed throttle cables or a cable with deteriorating inner strands can cause throttle inconsistency.
