Motorcycle Repair: 1978 Honda goldwing exhaust, honda goldwing, oxygen sensors

Question
QUESTION: On my gl1000 exhaust pipe (cylinder #3) there is an odd shaped obstruction that is not apparent in the other 3 pipes coming out of the heads.  It looks factory but also looks like it would put an imbalance in the exhaust flow. The other 3 pipes do not have this anomaly. Should all the pipes be free flowing or is there some reason for this? It is @2 inches from the inlet to the pipe and looks like a 17mm tube welded to the inside of the pipe that is closed on the end of it. any help would be great.  Thanks.

ANSWER: Hello Damien,

My best guess would be that someone has replaced
the exhaust pipes with those off a newer model.
Some pipes have "bungs" that are installed
for using oxygen sensors in the pipes.

These sensors send messages to the computer about the
bikes fuel mixture and then the computer
can modify the fuel mixture as needed.

It is not likely connected to anything
on your bike so you can leave it or remove
it as you see fit.

It won't affect the exhaust flow for normal
riding much only if you plan on drag racing or such ;)

Luck!

Pipe
QUESTION: No Drag racing, and thank you for the quick answer.  The pipe are stock 1978 pipes. The tube is not visible in any way from the outside. It is completely inside of the pipe.  I comes out from the inside of the pipe and continues axially down the pipe. I am about to take that part of the pipe apart and cut the "tube" out.

Answer
Damien,

The exhaust headers are a dual wall construction
and sometimes the inner tube can disintegrate.
I wonder if that is what you are seeing??
Very strange, let me know what it is if you
figure it out.
