Motorcycle Repair: 1985 VT 700 shadow carburetor, float valve, float bowl

Question
Hi.  Stupid question.  I'm cleaning my carbs and I take out the float and the float valve.  When I replace them I hang the float valve over the metal tab on the plastic float.  But then I read about measuring the float height with a gauge and it says to set the tab on the float so it is just touching the top of the valve.  Am I putting this together correctly, with the spring on the valve hanging over the tab on the float or should the tab on the float just sit on top of the valve when it's seated?  Thanks

Answer
Kevin... the spring loop just keeps the needle in contact with the float valve tang, so it doesn't swing to far down if the float bowl is empty, which might allow the float valve needle to drop out of the seat and into the float bowl.

Checking the float height, you want the float tang to just rest on the tip of the needle, not compressing the spring-loaded tip.
