Motorcycle Repair: Lucas Oil Additives for 78 Yamaha Xs400, lucas oil additives, engine longevity

Question
Hi,
I recently bought a '78 yamaha xs400, and am restoring it. I came across posts in various forums about Lucas Oil Additives and Fuel additives, which are supposed to prolong engine life and sealing especially for old engines.
But it seems that people are equally for it and against such products. Is this just a purist's rant? Can such products actually do what they claim? Im just looking for an economical way to prolong the life of the engine.

Answer
Hi Kartik,

The best advice I can give anyone for engine longivity is to allow the engine to reach operating temperatures before putting a load on it.

I'll explain why later. Lucas products may scientifically protect metal surfaces by reducing friction wear between moving metal parts. How these products work is posted on their websites.

Another product that is similar to Lucas' products is "ProLong." I use ProLong in my personal vehicles. ProLong's infomercials show various vehicles driven under extreme conditions without oil and withou engine seizures. Have you seen them? ProLong did a demomstration with an engine in my pressence that sold me on their product. No oil and engine temperatures did not increase significantly.

Avoid addistives that are designed to stop oil burning and other fluid leaks. These products cause oil seals to soften and expand. This may help with leaks for a time, if at all, and ruins seals.

Back to engine longevity....
Cylinders are machined true or round. Pistons are forged or cast in an oblong/oval shape. Pistons grown round with increases in temperature. When pistons are up to temperature, there is less engine wear and piston rings sealing properties are nearer optimum.

Same with spark plugs. Start the engine, place the transmission into drive, and put a load on plugs that are not up to operating temperature will glaze the plugs.

Let your vehicles warm up adequately before putting a load on them, even on summer days.

Using Lucas or ProLong is helpful. Use a quality oil and perform regular maintenance.
