Motorcycle Repair: harley jackshafts, splined shaft, rigid chopper

Question
QUESTION: No one at a dealership knows the answer here--I have a belt drive primary, the old starter would turn it over--when the starter wanted to work. So I bought an aftermarket starter and changed jackshafts. I left the spring off. The only parts are the shaft with starter gear which goes over the splined shaft on the starter itself, a hatshaped smaller shaft that goes into the end of the jackshaft and the bolt goes through this "tophat" and bolts into the spline on the starter. When turning over, the starter just spins. I put the old starter back on, without the spring (which is missing) and it still just spins. Harley says I need the regular 6 or 8 part shaft. But it started with the old starter but I simply lost the spring. Any idea where the spring would go and is there a way to see if the shaft is even the right one? The place I got the starter from is no help at all. It is on a 99 evo 1340 but a custom build on a rigid (chopper)

ANSWER: Go to Tedds V-twin on the web and go to the catalog. Go to page 279 and you will see the different starter shafts. If you go to page 278 you will see a blowup of the shaft and other parts and how they fit together.

QUESTION: Yeah I didnt think you would answer the question but had to try--the breakdown shows several parts---which I do not have---as I stated, I have only 3 parts---the shaft, the cap, and the bolt----plus the spring which the picture is not even close to what I have--hence using your sevice---which puts me right where I waqs before writing you guys.

Answer
I have to see what you have to be able to help you. That is why I had you look at the pics. I have to have a starting point. You never said if you have a open belt or closed belt drive. Which one do you have? If you have a open belt drive, what brand is it?
