Motorcycle Repair: DR370 Suzuki point gap settings, rotor stator, point gap

Question
Hello Gents,
I have a 1978 DR370 Suzuki. This was given to my teenage son.

The person that gave it to us. Tells us that it needs points and condensor. Ebay was a great choice. Ok now I have removed the flywheel cover. Found three lines on the flywheel, one marked with a T, one to the left of that with a F, 1 inche away from that to the left a verticle line. What mark do I use to set the point gap? I was told the gap should be .016-.018. What else should I be paying attetion too, while setting the point gap. Please HELP.

Answer
Al, setting points is a 2 step process.  First you turn the crankshaft/points cam until the points are at their widest gap. Adjust the gap to specified setting. Then turn the motor over until the F mark alignment is made with the rotor/stator indicators. The points must just be OPENING at the F mark alignment. If they are not, DO NOT CHANGE THE GAP... loosen the points backing plate and turn the whole plate in the desired direction until the point opening moment is correct. Double check your gap after moving the plate, as they are often a loose fit and the plate movement will affect the gap a little. When the gap is correct and the points are opening at the F mark, you are done.
