Motorcycle Repair: carb adjustment, air fuel mixture, accelerator tube

Question
QUESTION: Hi Mike
I have a 1985 flt just rebuilt it (project i bought )1340 cc evo i put a Andrews ev3 cam in it it has screamin eagle ignition and a screamin eagle butterfly carb and stock exhaust exhaust off a 2000 road king.I got it runing it sounds good . 2 problems 1 it idles nice if i roll the throttle easy, no problem but if i snap it quick it spits a flame out the carb  with a pop.I played with the adjust screw started at 5/8 opened not to much luck. Also when i shut down i get a little pop out the exhaust.2nd problem after shutting down i can see gas flowing up out the accelerator tube.I checked the float adj. 650 th of an inch at a 15 to 20 degree angle. And if i open the gas cap it has pressure.Dont know if thats normal if you suck on the cap it has easy flow.If you blow on it its harder but you can feel it work.tried runing with the cap off i didn't see any differance.Thinking of trying a different carb. Also i timed it to factory specks thinking of advancing it a little thanks for any help.

ANSWER: If you have gas flowing out the accelerator then you have a gakket ot o-ring that is leaking. Have you taken the bike out for a ride yet?

QUESTION: Hi Mike,
Yes for a short ride down the block ,not registered yet.Runs nice.Nothing over 35 mph.The gas coming out the accelerator tube stops a few minutes after i shut it down it's not like it's going to empty the tank.I'll check the gaskets and o rings. What do you make of the pop and flame out the carb? Only seem's to do it at idle under 1000 rpm.
         Thanks Steve

Answer
You probably need to rejet the carb after what you have added. Start by runnign the bike until warm and then adjust the air/fuel mixture screw by turning it inward, just until the bike stumbles and then back out about 1/4 of a turn. Now go for a ride, keeping the bike under 2500 RPM. If the bike stumbles , the intermediate jet is to small. If it acts like it wont take gas, then its to big. Remember, everytime you change jets, you have to go back and adjust the air/fuel misture screw. Once you have to intermediate jet set then you want ot do the main jet. Do it the same way, but ride over 3000RPM. When you are checking the intermediate jet you can tell if you are to rich or lean by riding for about 5 miles and then check the plugs. Black, to rich, really white, to lean
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
