Motorcycle Repair: ignition switch compatibility, honda cb900, ebay sellers

Question
Is The ignition switch on a 79 Honda cx500 compatible with the pinout on a 78 cx500 wiring harness?
I just recently suffered the bottom of the switch falling out and i would like to keep this bike running for a few more years.

Answer
Tim....  the 78-79 switches should be identical, thus interchangeable.

There are switch repair kits for non CDI switches...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda-CB900-CB750-Ignition-Switch-Base-Repair_W0Q...  for example where you may be able to just use the switch base retainer portion, if the pin configuration doesn't match up.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IGNITION-SWITCH-HONDA-CX500-NEW_W0QQitemZ320502876161QQcmd...   is interesting, as it mentions being a "pattern part" as in aftermarket copy.

The difference between the CX and CB switches of that time is that when you turn the key off on a CX, it grounds out the ignition system. The CB switches just open the battery circuit to the ignition system.

Check with your dealer to see A) if there is a switch repair kit from Honda for your bike B) if there are aftermarket EMGO switches available or C) try ordering one from Ebay sellers.
