Motorcycle Repair: 1976 flh motor sproket seal, adjustable pushrods, drip oil

Question
ALOHA MIKE, HOPE YOU ENJOYED YOUR VACATION.  YOU'VE HELPED ME BEFORE-THANKS.  ON MY 1976 FLH, AS FAR AS I KNOW IT IS MOSTLY STOCK, BUT IT DOES HAVE SOLID LIFTERS AND ADJUSTABLE PUSHRODS).  I STILL HAVE A LOT OF OIL GETTING INTO MY PRIMARY.  I'M THINKING IT MIGHT BE MY ENGINE SPROCKET SEAL, NOT JUST FROM THE OIL PUMP CHECK BALL VALVE (I KNOW THAT THIS IS AN ON GOING, INTERMITTENT PROBLEM-I'M PROBABLY GOING TO SOMEHOW CLAMP THIS LINE OFF WHEN I PARK, AND UNCLAMP IT TO RIDE).  HOW IS THE BEST WAY TO TELL IF THE OIL IS FROM THE CHECK VALVE OR THE MAIN SEAL?  ALSO, THE 1 1/2" HEX HEAD FOR THAT BOLT (OR NUT) IS TACK WELDED TO THE CAP IN 4 PLACES(?). THE DIAGRAM SHOWS THESE AS TWO SEPARATE PARTS.  ANY IDEA WHY THIS MIGHT BE LIKE THIS?  I HAVEN'T TRIED TO REMOVE THIS BOLT YET (I SHUDDER TO THINK OF THE PRICE OF A 1 1/2" IMPACT SOCKET).  IF I DO WILL MY WORKSHOP MANUAL WALK ME THROUGH THE SEAL REPLACEMENT?  IT SEEMS TO STOP AT THAT SEAL.  DO I HAVE TO DO ANYTHING THROUGH MY GEARCASE?  THANK YOU VERY MUCH ONCE AGAIN,  CHRIS

Answer
If your check valve ball is sticking it will dump oil into the bottom end, not into the primary. The primary gets its oil from a port on the oil pump. It is a small line going to the back of the inner primary. All it does is drip oil through the line.
If you are going to change that seal, you need a really strong impact wrench. Generally a 250 lb will not work. If you still attempt to change it you have to remove the clutch as well as the primary chain. You can follow the shop manual and it should guide you.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
