Motorcycle Repair: 1985 Honda VT700c, vacuum leaks, vacuum hose

Question
I have just obtained a 1985 Honda VT700c Shadow,  the guy that had owned said that it ran and was good to go.  My question is is it gets gas, it turns over but does not fire, what should i do?

Answer
Daniel....  Check it for spark, first. If no spark, then make sure that the KILL switch on the handlebars is in the ON position.

If you have spark, then perhaps the idle jets are blocked/plugged up. IF the fuel smells old, replace all the fuel in the tank and drain tbe carburetors at the float bowl drain screws.

Pull the fuel line from the petcock that goes to the carburetors and apply vacuum to the small vacuum hose on the side of the petcock. You should be able to just suck on the line with your mouth to check for any vacuum leaks and to verify that fuel is flowing out of the petcock to the carbs when vacuum is applied by the engine.

You need to verify the main components.  Compression, fuel, air, spark in order to get it to go again.
If the clutch switch is bad, you may have problems there, as well.
