Motorcycle Repair: LED indicators, honda cg, flash frequency

Question
hello Jan i have a Honda CG 125cc and i recently broke one of my indicators, i then ordered some Led indicators off Ebay and they worked at the start when i fitted them onto my bike but now when i turn on my indicators they all come on at the same time and they don't flash either. Some of my mates say i need a indicator relay ? but i don't even know what one is? Any help would be great thank you

Answer
The load on the turn signal relay is important, as it causes the correct flash frequency etc.  It soulds like the LED signals had a different load and this caused a problem with the flasher unit (sometimes referred to as a flasher or turn signal relay)  You will need to check the wattage of the original bulbss (normally 18W) per bulb, so total watts would be 36W per side, plus the repeater lamp on the dash, normally 3W, adding up to 39W load.  The voltage is 12, so the current in the relay is 39/12=3.3Amps.  Check the new led light power and make sure you end up with the same numbers, it they are different, you need a different flasher relay for whatever current is needed.  Good luck,  Jan
