Motorcycle Repair: CBX1000Z Carb 1979, air jets, slow jet

Question
QUESTION: Hi,i have removed my carbs and cleaned all jets and carb housings in an ultrasonic bath, but no.3 cyl does not run correctly and the bike idles poorly. ignition and compression all ok.All jets look ok and clean and float level is set to 15.5mm. But i didn't remove the pressed in idle jet, although i can blow threw with compressed air? Could this be the problem? and how do i do it and can i get replacements. Is this a fuel jet or an air jet? I'm based in the UK. Many thanks for your help Mark.

ANSWER: Hi Mark,

THANK YOU for a CBX question!!  The key problem with the CBX carbs is the idle air circuit, which gets clogged and can only be effectively cleaned by removing the slow jet, which is unfortunately, pressed in.  You eluded to that in your question.  Now it can be removed, but you will need to take the carbs off again and tap the brass jet with about 3 threads of very fine thread (in the lead-in) and pull it out.  Or you can see if you can get the jet cleared in place but this is tough to do.   The jet size is 35. This procedure has been described in the technical articles in the CBX club, (www.cbxclub.com).  Blowing the jets has no effect since there is an air supply in the tube where all the compressed air will go.
Once you get the idle jets cleared, the bike will run like a new bike after you balance the carbs properly.  Good luck,  Jan

QUESTION: Many thanks Jan. You certainly know your CBX,s!

That was a very helpful answer, just one small question if i may, will i be able to refit the original air jets once i have tapped/removed and cleaned, or will i need new? not sure where i can get them from??

Cheers Mark

Answer
You can re-use the originals, I do all the time.  You only need about two threads worth to be able to pull the little guys out.  I use a long screw with a nut and a couple of washers.  put the screw in, then tighten the nut against the carb body with a washer and out it comes.

Good luck,  Jan
