Motorcycle Repair: 1971 sporty clutch, clutch cable, sportster

Question
I bought a 1971 sportster and it jumps forward and stalls when i put it in gear. I have turned the adjusting screw on the case out till the handle dose not pull all the way in then adjusted till I had a full handle with the same stalling problem.  Dose this mean the clutch is shot?

Answer
What is happening is the clutch is not releasing all the way. Loosen the cable at the adjuster so you have alot of slack in it. Now loosen the clutch adjuster. taske the cable and push it towards the primary, so the lever inside is all the way back. Now adjust the clutch. Screw the sdjuster nut inward, just until it touches and then back out about 1/8 turn. Now adjust the clutch cable so you have about 1/8 inch play in the lever.
Good luck and happy riding
