Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1931 Ford Model A Cabrolet, good luck jack, volt battery

Question
I am considering the purchase of a 1931 Model A cabriolet.  The owner passed away five years ago and the wife had the car placed in their garage where it has sit and not started in that 5 year period. The wife has now decided to sell it. The car was supposedly restored and the engine rebuilt but no paper work. What should I do to see if the engine is OK before I purchase.  Is there an easy way to see if it will turn over and if it does, what next.  Please help as I am not a mechanic.
Thanks,
Jerry

Answer
Well, if you are going to get an A you will soon become a mechanic.  They are easy to work on and fun.  You will have to join a model A club.  Hope there is one near you.  Much more fun that way.  It depends on the price the woman wants for it.  If it is under $10,000, just get it.  If you can get it for less, even better.  If it ran when it was put away, it will probably start right up.  Put it in gear, third, and try to push it.  Make sure the brake is not on.  If it turns over, then get a battery and some gas and give it a go.  Try to find someone who knows the model A and have them help you.  If there is a crank, you can turn the engine over with that, but don't try to start it with the crank.  Use a battery.  You could hit it with a 12 volt battery for a moment using jumpers, but don't leave it on very long.
Sounds like you are in for some fun.  There is nothing like the A.
Good luck
