Motorcycle Repair: 1985 xl250r, xl250r, bill silver

Question
Hi, I have an 1985 xl250r that starts up and idles fine.  It will run for about 20 minutes to 1/2 an hour then stalls out and will not restart until it cools?  When it quits it seems to drown out (flooding?) at idle.? where to start? Andrew

Answer
Andrew, where to start is to pull the spark plug when it quits/won't start and see what it looks like and if you are still getting spark or not.

If you still get spark, then something is going on with the dual carb setup, which is a nightmare to repair, no doubt.

No spark leads you into having to test:
Pulse generator coil (part of the stator area)
CDI ignition module
KILL SWITCH
IGNITION SWITCH
Wire harness between headlight-Handlebar switches and main harness.

Make sure that the fuel cap is venting properly and check petcock screen for being restricted.

A good valve adjustment might be in order. Make sure the oil level is full.
