QUESTION: I bought a cab sync off a ebay and it didn't come with any instructions. it has two guages, tubing and one long brass fitting and one short. Do you know how to hook up and what the guages should read?

Thank You,

Jason

ANSWER: Hey Jason,

I used to have a Shadow VT500.
I believe the VT700 is a twin cylinder with two carbs, correct?

There are many types of carb sync tools (manometers). Some are factory made, while others can be made with materials from a hardware store. If I could see a pic of it, I could describe how to hook it up better.

Your bikes manual should provide instructions on how to do a carb sync and what speed you need to run the engine to do the sync. Usually one of the cylinders is not adjustable (factory set) and you would match the adjustable cylinder to that one. Also, you usually set the idle speed to around 2000 RPM when you do a carb sync. Lastly, your bike needs to be at operating temperature before preforming a carb sync. Again, consult your manual for exact specs.

For hook up you will need to remove your gas tank and find a temporary way to get fuel to your carbs with the tank off. This could be anything from sitting the tank on a ledge or shelf up high and running a long gas line to your carbs. Or by hooking up a small gas tank to a fuel line that goes to your carbs.
You should have an intake hole on the carb boots (between the carb and the cylinder). The intake hole on the boot will have a small screw in it. You will take the screw out and I suspect you will need to put those brass fittings into these intake holes.
Next you will hook the tube from the first gauge to the brass fitting on the first cylinder. Then you hook the tube from the second gauge to the brass fitting on the second cylinder.

Start the bike and adjust the idle to what is recommended in your manual.
Next locate the adjuster screw on your carb. Again your manual will show you exactly where this is. Some are located on top of the slide and others are at the front of the carb.
Turn the adjuster screw on the carb that is adjustable so meter matches the carb that is non-adjustable. The measurements on the needle aren't important. Matching them is what is important.

When you have them matched, turn the idle back down to approx 1000 RPM and turn the bike off. Take the brass fittings off the intake and put the screws back in the intake hole. Put your tank back on and you should be done.

QUESTION: here is what it looks like

Answer
Are there threads on the bottom of those brass fittings?
If so, then I do suspect they are what needs to be screwed into the small intake holes on the carb boots. I'm not sure why they need to be that long though...

So one tube for each meter and then the tubes go into the brass fittings. If the brass fittings have threads, then they go into the intake hole on the carb boots.
