Motorcycle Repair: wet sumping, crankcase breather, pencil eraser

Question
QUESTION: thank for your time. I have a 83 flht (just bought) put new cams in,new pistons, new oil pump, have oil blowing out the breather hose now, I am sure the breather gear is in correct time as I triple checked it before assembly. trying to check the check ball in oil pump, I am holding the check ball down with a pencil eraser and turning the motor over and oil still is pumping thru is this normal??

ANSWER: When you say you have oil coming out the breather, does it do it all the time or just on startup and then clears itself? When running the bike and looking in the oil tank, do you see a return oil flow? How much oil is coming out the breather?

QUESTION: thanks for your time!! the oil comes out on start up about 4 table spoons, it seems to clear up after that. about every 6 or 7 startups nothing comes out.there is oil returning to the oil tank it flows harder when i give it the gas and slows down at idle. I'm thinking if it was out of time on the breather gear it would blow oil out the crankcase breather all the time, and if it is the check ball I would see oil at startup ????? thanks again  for your helpyour help

Answer
Your having a little oil sump in the bottom end of the motor. The pol pump cant pump it back fast enough so it comes out the vent. Your check valve ball might be sticking or have a small spec of dirt on it. If your breather was out of time, your bike wouldnt run right and you would get alot of oil all the time
Good luck and happy riding
