Motorcycle Repair: Suzuki VS 750 engine problem, power interruptions, fuel contamination

Question
Hi, I have a Suzuki VS 750, 1991. I rode it today and it kept losing power for about a second each time.  It was as if I was de throttling for a split second each time.  It's fuel tank is full, the electrics warning lights did not illuminate so don't think anything wrong there.
Regards
Eddie

Answer
Eddie, V-twins have a certain harmonic vibration set that can jar electrical connections loose and cause other vibration related issues. That is but one of several causes of engine misfiring or power interruptions. It is important to establish a baseline of your bike's major systems.

Check the fuel system for fuel tank venting issues, petcock restrictions, and fuel contamination problems. The electrical system should be evaluated for having a sound battery, fully functional charging system and then a review of the ignition components and connections. Spark plug caps can fail (should have 5k ohms resistance) and spark plugs can get fouled with fuel/oil in older machines.

Electrical problems can come both as power feed interruptions and grounding failures. Many later model bikes have safety switches that fail, like sidestand and clutch lever items. They can be actuated by loose switches, wire connectors or incomplete plunger motions.

Sudden on/off conditions are often electrical in nature. Prolonged moments of power loss can generally be traced to fuel feed issues.
