Motorcycle Repair: 1988 HARLEY TRANS NOISE, clutch lever, noise question

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1988 shovelhead, noise in transmission
when you start to move and accelerate you hear this grinding noise, sounds like a dry bearing seizing and/or
a chain dragging on a piece of dry metal.
the more load or accelectaion, the louder the noise.
It seems worse the hotter it gets
//
I had a so called harley mech. check the clutch, a says he replaced the shoe? tightned a comp.sprocket?
i still have the noise.
It is loud, you can not ride the bike

ANSWER: Does the noise soften or go away if you pull in the clutch? If it does the bearing in your inner primary is probably bad.

QUESTION: REGARDLESS OF SPEED, WHEN YOU LET OFF THE THROTTLE OR PULL IN ON CLUTCH LEVER THE NOISE IS ALWAYS GONE.
MY SO CALLED HARLEY MECH.SAID HE HAD PRIMARY OUT OF THE
UNIT, SHOULD HE OF BEEN ABLE TO SEE THIS BEARING ?????
OR HE JUSTED MISSED THE PROBLEM

Answer
That sounds like your problem to me. The bearing is on the back side of the inner primary where your mainshaft passes through. It has a seal in front of it so maybe the guy didn't see the bearing. But to change this seal and bearing set you have to pull the entire primary of again.
