Motorcycle Repair: 1990 fzr 1000, alternate power source, v twins

Question
i just purchased a 1990 yamaha fzr 1000. the bike has been setting for 3 yrs. i got the bike started today and rode it down the street. the bike is very weak, sluggish and slow to rev. i think it is not getting enough fuel. i haven't check the plugs to verify. i also took the air box off to look at the carbs while the bike was running and i am getting a ton of blow back throught the carbs when i rev the engine. is that normal??? i wired the fuel pump up to an alternate power source and it works until it builds pressure and then quits. i dont see a return, so is that the way it works? i have a ton of questions. i hope you dont mind. i was a car mechanic for 6 yrs and i have worked on motorcycles my whole life, but they were dirt bikes and v twins. so this is a whole new beast. i ordered a shop manual.just trying to get a jump on things.

Answer
The fuel pump is most likely not your problem, the bike sat, flush the fuel tank and fill with fresh fuel...take the carbs off, clean them manually, this means running a very thin wire thru every jet you remove to completely clean the jets inside and to return the jets to their proper sise, jets clog on their insides and this happens when fuel sits in the carbs for some time, the process starts in about the first month. Remember, the carb bowls have an atmospheric vent which keeps the gas in the bowls in contact with the air at all times... the amount of fuel in the bowls is small the result ? Gas in the carbs goes stale and starts to clog the small jets up. ESPECIALLY the idle or pilot jets... do the work, there is no other way.
Thanks.
