Motorcycle Repair: 883 Sportster Wont Start, turn signals, starter button

Question
QUESTION: I own a 2000 883 Custom.  Owned it for about 7 years.  Everything worked fine until about 6 months ago.  This problem happened suddenly; turned it on to start it, but the neutral light did not register (it was in neutral).  I tried putting it in first and then back into neutral, but no luck.  It won't start; I'm assuming it is a safety feature (even tried holding in the clutch with no luck).  All electronics seem to work except for headlight and the small panel containing neutral/oil lights.  I checked the main fuses (under the seat), and they were fine.  Finally got frustrated and let it sit a few days.  Still had no luck.  Checked about two weeks later and it started.  Didn't have a problem for the last six months.  Now, it is happening again: won't register neutral, won't start.  If you need more info, let me know.

ANSWER: Do any lights come on? Pull your plugs and holding one against the head turn the bike over. Are you getting spark? With a test light check at the hot post on the coil with the ignition on. Do you have power?

QUESTION: I'm sorry, I should have been more specific.  When I turn on the bike, I can't get it to crank over.  Nothing happens when I push the starter button.  It does have a taillight, brakelight, and turn signals, but no headlight.

Answer
you probably have a short int eh electrical system. What you need to do is start by checking with a test light, at the ignition switch to see if when you turn the key on you have power. then follow the power to the fuses and then keep folowing until you find the short
Good luck and happy riding
