Motorcycle Repair: shovelhead hard to start cold, cold question, dyna ignition
My shovel
QUESTION: Hi Mike, I have a 76 74" shovel. It is kick only with a dyna ignition and a super b.I built it 6 years ago, and it has always started easily, until last year,it got real hard to start cold.i went through it this winter, freshened up the top end,and checked all the wiring, but this year it is hard as hell to start! it will fire, but not run,and it seems if i walk away for 15 minutes,it will then go after 6 or 7 kicks.once it is warm it is 1 kick EVERY time.I have tried with or without prime kicks. never used to,it was key on,enrichner on,and it would go on 1-3 kicks.Any suggestions? Thanks, John.

QUESTION: I pulled them after a good ride, and they are very light brown. it looks to me like it is running a bit hot. Thanks, John.

Answer
Couple ot things. If you have solid pushrods, make sure they are not to tight. Check your timing, to far advanced and its hard to start. Try priming kicks for about 3-4 times, then turn ont he ignition and see if that doesnt work better
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
