Motorcycle Repair: throttle sticks, shadow 750, light oil

Question
I have an 03 Shadow 750, the throttle on the handlebar returns all the way, however, the idle does not return to idle position. If I quickly twist and return the hand grip the idle returns to normal. I had the carbs removed and rebuilt and replaced the choke cable. The problem still exist. HELP ME PLEASE I am running out of options and money.

Answer
Rich, this sounds like a sticking throttle cable. It can be caused by a couple of problems.  The most common problem is cable routing.  You need to have the cable routed correctly so there are no tight bends in the cable that increases the resistance in side the cable.  THe second problem is lubrication.  I prefer to use a very light oil in the cables so it doesn't gum up.  Most modern cables are teflon coated inside that eliminates the need to lube them so it's probably a routing problem.

The cable should be routed to the left side of the steering head on the frame and then down to the carbs.  I don't know the routing on anything past 1982 when I quit working as a mechanic. If it's routing, a quick way to check is by turning the handle bars all the way one direction and check the throttle return and then the other direction.  If it freely or more freely one way and not the other, it's definately a routing issue.
