Motorcycle Repair: re: fouled plugs, intake runners, mechanical experience

Question
1991 gsxr 750 Rode bike all last riding season strong no problems. After storage during the winter I rode the bike a few times, power felt strong. Next time the bike would not start. New plugs installed bike ran strong for 50km then plugs fouled (sooty Black) Bike smelled of gas. (rich)? I have no mechanical experience but looking for possible causes before I have someone do the work . Thanks for your knowledge and time Robert. Canada

Answer
Reduced airflow through the intake system will cause the bike to run rich and foul the plugs. Where did you store your bike over the winter? If it was in a shed or unheated garage, it is very possible that squirrels or mice have used the airbox for food storage - a very common occurrence here in Canada. Check the airbox and intake runners for obstructions, as well as examining the air filter - it might be plugged and due for a change. Also check the operation of the choke mechanism to make sure it isn't stuck in the closed position.
