once on riding bike it started to idle badly but rv; counter showed 2500 revs it then cleared any ideas?

Answer
By "illuminating green light", I assume you mean the neutral indicator light. I am also assuming that no other electrical system works when this happens (ie: no headlight, tail light, horn, etc), in which case your ignition switch is probably defective and not making proper electrical contact every time you switch it on. There could also be a cold solder joint or a broken wire at the terminals on the ignition switch. A faulty kill switch will disable the starter, but not the rest of the electrical system so I doubt it is an issue here.

As your bike is a UK version, there may be some wiring differences as compared to the North American models... there might be a main relay connected to your ignition switch, if it is faulty it will not allow power to all the systems when it is turned on. I believe your bike is equipped with a sidestand safety switch, this feature kills the motor if the bike is put into gear while the sidestand is down. However, I do not believe it cuts ALL power, so it is doubtful this switch is the cause of your problem.

There is a large club in the UK dedicated to the Virago, you can try asking your question on their tech forum if none of what I've suggested has helped: http://www.vsoc.org.uk/
