Motorcycle Repair: Carborator upgrade for 75 ironhead, cv carb, new cv

Question
QUESTION: Hi Mike, I just purchased a stock 1975 ironhead sporty with
a newly rebuilt engine, transmission, clutch, etc.. after
sitting for nearly 8 years. The stock Bendix carb was also
rebuilt except for the float, pin and spring which has been
giving me some problems. I wanted a newer, more reliable
carb so I bought a new CV from a friend for dirt cheap but
I am still having problems with the motor running smoothly
during idling even with fresh plugs. The bike ran great
before with the Bendix, when the float would work properly.
I think the CV carb might be getting air through the
adapter. The other problem with the CV is that it places
the air cleaner too far out for my leg to use the brake
properly on the new forward controls. I just read some of
your replies recommending an upgrade to the Bendix and it
seems you are partial to S&S. Should I sell the CV and buy
an S&S? If so, which model and can I use the stock
manifold?   Thanks for your time and help!  Brian

ANSWER: When you installed the CV carb did you rejett it? What exhaust are you running?

QUESTION: No, I did not rejett the CV carb. The exhaust is tapered
muffler style drag pipes.

Answer
There are tow things you can do. Either change carbs, like the S&S, or rejett the CV carb.
If the CV carb doesnt let you ride correctly, then I would change. I like the S&S do to it flows alot of air and it simple to install.
If you install a S&S you will have to chnage the manifold. the S&S carb kit comes with a new manifold
Good luck and happy riding
