Motorcycle Repair: honda interceptor 1984 vf750, honda interceptor, starter problems

Question
hi, i know your description says 1970's to 80's but its the closest to my bike. Hope you can help. Basically, my 84 interceptor 750 has a starter problem. I bought the bike last year, in about a week its starts giving starter problems which seem like a dead battery. Change the battery the problem is still there, so i take out the starter and open it up, wow, the brushes are broken. so i buy the kit and replace the brushes and parts, test it out and it works great. I put it back in the bike, and its fine, a couple of starts later its dead again, same problem. So i figure its still the starter, I pull out the starter again , open it up, yup its broken brushes again??? what the!^&!%&^$%!#..... So, i bring the starter to a shop and he replaces the brushes and parts, test it and its fine. I put it into the bike and again it works for a couple of starts, until it dies out again? Im mechanically inclined to open up the starter and fix it, but now i dont know where to go or how to look further...
Why would this be happening?  thank-you

Answer
Dale, it sounds like the engine is bound up putting a lot of drag on the starter.  Try rotating the crank with a wrench and see if it turns freely.  Normally, when there's high current in the starter, it burns up the wiring and brush leads.  It doesn't result in broken brushes.  Broken brushes would indicate the bearings are not controlling the armature motion putting the brushes in a bind.

I'm afraid I can't help much more than this.
