Motorcycle Repair: clutch repair, clutch pack, clutch repair

Question
QUESTION: I just recently bought a 1982 Yamaha J.P. maximum, the clutch was out too tight and slipping. I adjust the clutch to get a little play and it isn't dragging when I put it in gear, but it is still slipping. Should I replace the clutch plates and the friction plates or can I just change the clutch plactes? Do I need to replace the springs as well?

ANSWER: Alan, was the bike being ridden daily when you bought it or has it been sitting for a period of time?

QUESTION: I'm not sure if it was ridden or sitting .The tack didnt work and speed omiter was sqeaking so I sprayed speed and stopped the noise and tack some times will come up some but doesent go back down (not working right). The person that sold me the bike told me he was selling so he could get a bigger one .Went to get tag and wasnt in his name ,was registered in some body elses nameabout 5 months earlier .It has like a warning gauges on it and stand light ,fuel light and ,batt. light stays on but be ok. Had police check out and they said it was ok and give me a paper to get tag with so me guess is it was sitting.
thanks for your help
Alan

Answer
My guess is that the clutch pack-- fibers and steel plates-- are all stuck together in one big hunk from sitting. This will need to be removed from clutch shell and either replaced with new or pried apart and the fibers cleaned up and the steels sand blasted and reinstalled.
