Motorcycle Repair: Starting trouble, gs650, bill silver

Question
I have an 82 gs650 new batt. new plugs. fresh gas. it will start with starting fluid but as soon as that runs out it will die and wont start again with out it. what could be the problem..  oh yeah I noticed that one carb had gas dripping out then stopped. I don't know what to do next.

Answer
I'll assume that this is a new acquisition and it hasn't run for awhile.

The carbs are full of gunk, which has plugged up the idle jets and/or has contaminated the float valves.

Drain the carburetors and buy some Yamaha carb cleaner. Mix with gasoline and reinject into the carburetor float bowls, as instructed on the bottle. If that doesn't work, then they have to come off for an overhaul.
