Motorcycle Repair: throttle, suzuki gsxr 1100, float bowls

Question
I own a 87 suzuki gsxr 1100 and I recently put new spark plugs, cleaned the carbs and put a new petcock valve in it..The previous owner said it sat for 6 months or so so that is why i did all of that..the problem that I am still having is that when the bike is started it will idle for a couple of minutes then die and I have to restart it..also when i lay the throttle just a little especially switching gears, it tends to hesitate but when i lay on the throttle it slowly goes away..what causes this?  Please let me know if you know what the idling problem would be and the throttle one.  thanks..

Answer
Jesse, I am not a Suzuki guy, but went to http://www.bikebandit.com/suzuki-motorcycle-gsxr1100h-1987/o/m6198 for any clues. It doesn't appear to have a fuel pump or extra fuel filter, so I guess we rule those items out.

Sounds like it is starving for fuel or has an air leak in the system. Check the intake manifolds for cracks, loose vacuum hoses going to emission components, etc.

You said that you "cleaned" the carbs. Was that a full carb overhaul or just drop the float bowls and spray out the gunk? Idling and transitional throttle issues are usually caused by blocked or restricted idle circuits. The idle jet holes are very tiny and must be completely clean/clear for the bike to run/start/idle well.

Hopefully, the spark plugs went in okay, nothing cracked and the plug wires/caps are all normal.
