Motorcycle Repair: 1994 HERITAGE SOFTAIL NOT CHARGING, clutch basket, dirt bikes

Question
BIKE QUIT AND BATTERY WAS DEAD, REPLACED BATTERY AND IT RUNS BUT IS NOT CHARGING, CHECKED AT BATTERY WITH BIKE RUNNING AND BARELY HAVE 12 VOLTS. HAVE WORKED ON MANY DIRT BIKES AND ATVS, BUT THIS IS MY FIRST HARLEY. I AM A MECHANIC IN  OUTDOOR POWER EQUIPMENT. COULD YOU HELP ME TROUBLESHOOT OR TELL ME WHAT TO REPLACE, I HAVE SEEN STATOR AND REGULATOR KITS FOR SALE, DO I NEED ANY SPECIAL TOOLS OR TIPS, IS THE STATOR ON THE RIGHT? ANY HELP APPRECIATED, THANKS, SCOTT

Answer
You first need to test the stator. Unplug the regulator and do a OHMs test from each wire on the stator to ground. If you have OHMs its bad. Test from wire to wire, you should have OHMs. Start the bike and at the stator with a AC volt meter you should get around 60 volts at 2000 RPM. If the stator does not pass any of the above tests, then its bad. If it does, then the regultor is bad.
To change the stator you hvae to remove the primary cover, motor sprocket, clutch basket and the rotor that goes over the stator. To get the motor sproket nut off, you will probably need an impact wrench.
Good luck and happy riding
