Motorcycle Repair: Engine Testing, bench test, engine test

Question
I am doing my first major motorcycle project in restoring a 1976 Honda CB750A Hondamatic engine.  I was wondering what components I will need to connect and what the proper procedure is for performing a "bare bones" engine test on the workbench.  I want to keep things as simple as possible so that I don't end up running off on troubleshooting tangents.

Is it as simple as connecting the fuel lines and then just hooking up the battery to the ignition coils to the spark plugs to jump start it and throttling by hand at the carbs?

Answer
Dave, I'd recommend you not try to bench test this engine.  After going to the trouble of rebuilding it, you'll be really disappointed if you break something because it wasn't hooked up right or the engine wasn't setting at the right level and oil didn't get to the right place.

If you really want to bench test the engine, it can be done but it's almost as much trouble as putting the engine the frame.  You have to hookup the fuel, coils, carbs, throttle, parts of the harness.  If you really want to let me know and I'll see if I can talk you through it.
