Motorcycle Repair: 2003 Honda VT699CD, air fuel mixture, float chamber

Question
Hi Rich,
I am a new biker. I got this bike 3 weeks ago. It stumbled on starting to engage the clutch. I had to race it up and feather the clutch to get going. Because the bike was idle for a long time, I had the carb cleaned (off the bike) yesterday. No parts were needed and I reinstalled the carb today. The tank had a lot of rust so I "Kreemed" it while the carb was being cleaned. The bike still stumbles as soon as I open the throttle - in fact it dies. What causes this? I would sure like to fix it myself - shop repairs are very expensive. I have tried various choke settings - no choke at all seems to be best for starting. I have tried various idle speed settings - no effect. On this bike there are no adjustments (except for shop mechanics) so I am at a loss. I have looked at the air intake to the carb and I can see the accelerator pump shooting fuel down the throat when I turn the throttle slightly. The float chamber has fuel.  Can you help?

Answer
Sorry, for taking so long to get to this answer, but I've been out of town.

Jerry, my experience is on older Hondas but it sounds like the bike is leaning out the air fuel mixture as the throttle is tipped in.  Make sure that the accelerator pump starts injecting fuel immediately when the throttle is moved.  Any travel before in the throttle before the start of injection, will cause the stumble.

Rich
