Motorcycle Repair: how a motorcycle starter works, starter solenoid, clutch gear

I have a starter that worked just fine. Now when I hit the switch, the starter turns the jack shaft turns. But it does not kick out the jack shaft to engage with the clutch hub. Does the solenoid control the jack shaft to engage?

Answer
When you hit the starter button the starter turns as well as the starter soleniod, which is othing but a magnet, pushes out hte jackshaft to engage the clutch gear. If your jackshaft isnt moving, then you hae a problem with the starter solenoid
